Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant, Bayan Point, Penang (25 June 2015)
Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant (GPS: 5.33253, 100.29447) at Bayan Point is one of the two Daorae outlets in Penang (the other being in Tanjong Tokong). It occupies two shoplots at Bayan Point. The restaurant offers a wide selection of Korean dishes.
Daorae Bayan Point is our favourite Korean restaurant in Penang. The prices here used to be quite reasonable, but over the years have risen repeatedly, so that by 2018, we felt it is no longer cheap to eat there regularly. We still go there from time to time, but not as often as before.

On this visit, we had Woo Geo Ji Galbi Tang, which is beef ribs and dried cabbage in Korean beanpaste soup, served with rice (RM24); and Bulgogi - fine slices of prime beef, marinated in sweet soysauce, and simmered in its own juices, with an assortment of mushrooms and glass noodles (RM28).

On the second last day of the year, we decided to have our dinner at Daorae. I had the Kimchi Bibim Gooksoo while my wife had the Woo Geo Ji Galbi Tang.

Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant has been my favourite Korean restaurant for a long time. My wife and I often go there whenever we feel like having Korea food. Our usual order is one bibimbab and one bulgogi. That is how we order at every Korean restaurant we visit, and how they prepare the two dishes is our we judge the restaurant.
The bibimbab 비빔밥 and bulgogi 불고기 at Daorae agree to our taste, so that is why we often go there. We don't even look at the menu. As soon as we sit down and the menu was produced, we straightaway place our usual order of one bibimbab and one bulgogi. A short while later, the waiter (from what I see, all their waiters are foreign males) return with the tea and the side dishes.
We like Daorae because it offers a good number of banchan 반찬 or side dishes, including two types of kimchi 김치・ - the regular type using baechu (배추) and the cube kimchi called kkakdugi, made with 깍두기 made with Korean white radish.

There are variations to the side dishes given - and they started giving salad not too long ago - but the two kimchi are always there. Some of the dishes are given a generous dripping of the Korean red chilli sauce, gochujang 고추장, which tastes a lot like our local red sauce, tnee3cniau3. My wife and I are delighted when the dish dish includes the sweet lotus roots (Yeongeun jorim 연근조림). A little later, the waiter will usually bring a small Korean pancake, jeon 저냐, unless we happen to have already ordered pancake. The tea is on the house.

Over the years, we notice that the price has crept up substantially. It used that these two orders cost less than RM50 (and so I have to pay for it by cash). Now the two orders costs over RM50. On top of that, the restaurant has started charging a 10% service charge, and on top of that, 6% GST over the entire total.
On our visit today, the bulgogi now cost RM28 while the bibimbab was RM22. That totals RM50. Previously that was nett. Nowadays, however, we have to pay an additional RM5 service charge, and on top of that total, a RM3.30 GST, bringing a grand total of RM58.30.

And on top of it all, the bulgogi is no longer as nice as before. It used to be darker. (If I can find a photo from an earlier visit, I shall post it so you have something to compare). Now (for the past two visits), they have changed their recipe, so the bulgogi is much lighter in colour. It does not look as nice as before. Fortunately the bibimbab still looked okay.
We will continue to patronise Daorae, for it is still our favourite Korean restaurant. Tastewise, we still prefer the bibimbab and bulgogi that we get here than the ones prepared at other Korean restaurants in Penang. However, now that the bulgogi is somewhat less satisfactory, and also price has increased so much, we are on a look out for other Korean restaurants that offer better value. By "better value", we would mean taste has to be the same or better than what we get at Daorae, at a lower cost. If we found that, then we will make a switch - if the restaurant is conveniently located - otherwise we will continue to visit Daorae.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
