Dato Koyah Road (25 November 2017)
Dato Koyah Road, which is also called Jalan Dato Koyah, is a short road that joins
Penang Road and
Clarke Street. It is named after Syed Mustapha Idris, better known by his alias, Dato Koyah, a Malabari faith healer who was regarded as a saint among the convict labourers in early 19th Century George Town. Dato Koyah passed away in 1840. The
Dato Koyah Shrine along
Transfer Road is his mausoleum.
During the 19th Century, the area from Transfer Road all the way to
Kampung Malabar used to be a Malabari settlement. Their legacy remains in the name of Dato Koyah Road, as well as the distinct South Indian flavour to parts of Transfer Road.
