Doutor Coffee 株式会社ドトールコーヒー is a Japanese café specialising in fresh quality coffee. It opens its first outlet in Penang on Tuesday, 18 April, 2017 in Gurney Plaza. This is also the fourth Doutor Coffee outlet in the country, with other outlets namely AEON Mall Tebrau City Johor Bahru, Sunway Velocity Mall Kuala Lumpur, and AEON Bukit Tinggi Klang opening in the preceding months since November, 2016.

Doutor Coffee was founded by Toriba Hiromichi. The name "doutor" means doctor in Portuguese, and it came about because Mr Hiromichi once stayed along a street by that name in São Paulo, Brazil, and it has obviously made a lasting impression on him. Since opening a tiny 30 square meter kiosk in Harajuku, Tokyo, on 18 April, 1980, the coffee shop has spawned some 900 outlets in Japan and a total of 1,200 outlets worldwide. It even has its own coffee plantation in Hawaii¹.

To enter the Malaysia market, Doutor Coffee partners with Texchem Group, which has a long-established reputation in the restaurant business in the country, operating over a hundred Sushi King outlets in Malaysia.

The signature beverage at Doutor Coffee is its drip drip coffee. During the opening of Doutor Coffee at Gurney Plaza, Doutor's master roaster Mr Masahiro Kanno provided us a demonstration of the preparation of this coffee, using the regular coffee beans and the Ethiopia Natural Yirgacheffe coffee beans. I documented the steps on video and hope to share it as soon as possible. In addition, Mr Kanno also prepared café au lait, a mixture of milk and coffee in equal amounts.
