How Eu Yan Sang began

The history of Eu Yan Sang goes back to the 1870s, to a very different time from the present. The landscape of 1870 was of a deeply forested Malaya that was in the midsts of being transformed into a vast expanse of tin mines. An influx of Chinese immigrants, mainly from the southern provinces of Guangdong and Fujian, came in to populate the newly established tin-mining towns of the Kinta Valley. Most arrived penniless, with only the clothes on their backs, to irk out a living in the tin mines as coolies.

It was a time without planes, trains or automobiles. There were no expressways linking the different towns, so most of the new towns sprouted off the banks of major rivers, such as the Perak River and the Klang River, where huge deposits of tin have been discovered.

Eu Yan Sang in Ipoh dates back to 1959 (19 August 2006)

If the coolie miners fell sick, there were no hospitals, clinics or dispensaries. Many succumbed to malaria, stress and injuries (from mining accidents as well as from the frequent clashes that erupted between mining groups). These destitute minings received no medical attention, and sought relief through opium.

It was then that a young immigrant by the name of Eu Kong appeared on the scene. As with the many single Chinese men who arrived during that time, Eu Kong stepped foot in Malaya to seek his fortune. Eu quickly saw the condition was ripe to set up a Chinese medicine hall where he could prescribe herbal remedies for the various ailments. This led to the opening in 1873 of the first Eu Yan Sang in Gopeng, Perak. The name translates roughly as "Eu's gift of benevolence" or as the company's tagline puts it, "Caring for Mankind".

The Malaysia Tourism Centre in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur was originally the villa belonging to Eu Tong Sen, from 1935 (20 July 2009)

By the time Eu Kong passed his business into the hands of his son, it has grown to include various other interest including mining. His only son, Eu Tong Sen, even eclipsed his father as one of the richest and most prominent man in early 20th century Malaya and Singapore. His villa in the Ampang district of Kuala Lumpur is today a historic building that houses the Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC). Eu Tong Sen Street in Singapore is also named in honour of his contributions.

Meanwhile, Eu Yan Sang grows to become the biggest Chinese medical brand in the region, chalking up a revenue of S$289.9 million as of Financial Year 2012, with twelve consecutive years of record sales since 2000. Today Eu Yan Sang operates a chain of medical halls all over Malaysia as well as in Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and China.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
