Oberndorf is a small village to the north of
Salzburg, Austria. Its call to fame is from the fact that this was where the carol
Silent Night was performed for the first time, in 1818. The original lyrics,
Stille Nacht, was written in German by Austrian priest Father Josef Mohr, while the melody was composed by Austrian headmaster Franz Xaver Gruber.
It was performed at the Nikolaus-Kirche in Oberndorf, Austria, on 24 December, 1818. The actual church has been demolished in 1900 due to flood damaged. A new chapel was located further upriver, and is called the Stille-Nacht-Gedächtniskapalle, or Silent Night Memorial Chapel.
