Međugorje is a town in the Herzegovina region, in western Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the border with Croatia<. It is the most famous Catholic pilgrimage site in Bosnia and Herzegovina, due to visions of the Virgin Mary sighted there by six young people.

Međugorje, which means the "area between the mountains", is a highland town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has a population of just about 4,000 people, almost all of whom are ethnic Croats. The town is about 200 meters above sea level and experiences a mild Mediterranean climate.

The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary as seen in Međugorje is given the name Our Lady of Međugorje. She appeared for the first time on 24 June 1981 to six Herzegovinian Croat teenagers, at a time when Međugorje was still part of socialist Yugoslavia. Since then an entire industry has developed to support the resulting religious tourism. There are now numerous hotels, hostels, restaurants and shops, particularly in the vicinity of the Church of St James.

So far the Vatican has not acknowledged the sightings at Međugorje, despite claims by pilgrims of heals and strange solar phenomena (such as seeing the sun spinning in the sky, of seeing hearts and crosses around the sun, and looking directly at the sun without damaging the eye).

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
