Czech Republic is a small landlocked country in Central Europe. Covering 78,866 sq km (30,450 sq mi), it has a population of 10.7 million people (2011 estimate). The capital and largest city is Prague. The Czech Republic is bordered by Germany to the west and northwest, Poland to the northeast, Slovakia to the southeast, and Austria to the south.

The Czech Republic is today a parliamentary republic headed by a president and a prime minister. Official languages of the country are Czech and Slovak. Over 90% of the population are ethnic Czechs while the remainer are Moravians and Slovaks. The Czech Republic is in the Central European Time zone, which is an hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1)in winter and UTC+2 in summer.

The official currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech koruna (CZK). Phone IDD code here is +420. The electricity is 230V/50Hz using European plugs. Traffic is driven on the right. In 2010 the Czech Republic had a nominal GDP of $199 billion, and a per capita nominal GDP of $19,084. The per capita GDP at purchasing power parity was $24,832.

The Czech Republic was the Principality of Bohemia from AD 870 to 1198, and the Kingdom of Bohemia from 1198 to 1918. The collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire following World War I led to the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918, incorporating Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia and the Carpathian Ruthenia. In November 1989, the Velvet revolution returned the country to a liberal democracy and on 1 January, 1993, the country peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic was recognised as a developed country by the World Bank in 2006.

The Czech Republic is today a member of the Schengen Agreement, meaning visitors from the EU and EFTA countries only need to bring an approved ID to visit. The Prague Ruzyně International Airport (PRG) is the gateway to the Czech Republic. It is located 10 km to the west of downtown Prague. The airport is the home base for Czech national carrier Czech Airlines. It receives regular flights from major cities in Europe.
