Telč was founded in the 13th century. It served as a fort on the crossroad of major trading routes between Bohemia, Moravia and Austria. In the 14th century, a Gothic-style castle was built here.

In 1530 the castle and a great part of Telč was destroyed by a big fire. Italian architects and builders were engaged by the governor of Moravia to rebuild the castle. They ended up rebuilding much of Telč in the Renaissance style. Most of these buildings survive to this day, giving Telč a uniquely uniform appearance.
