Roskilde Cathedral, or
Roskilde Domkirke, is a cathedral in the city of Roskilde in Zealand in eastern Denmark. It holds the distinction of being the first Gothic cathedral to be erected of brick, and its design paved the way for the brick Gothic style of churches across northern Europe.
Roskilde Cathedral was built between the 12th and 13th centuries. The architecture is a fusion of Gothic and Romaneque styles. Until the 20th century, it was the only cathedral on the island of Zealand. The building has two spires which dominate the skyline of Roskilde.
Due to its significance, Roskilde Cathedral is the burial site of Danish monarchs. Among them is Harald I, also called Bluetooth, the 10th century Viking king.
Roskilde Cathedral was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 19th session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Berlin, Germany, on from 4 to 9 December, 1995.
