Jyväskylä located in the heart of Finland, is the biggest city in the Finnish Lakeland. The capital of Central Finland, Jyväskylä covers 1,466 sq km (566 sq mi) and has a population of 131,000 (2011 estimate), making it the 7th largest city in the country. Jyväskylä is about 270 km (170 mi) north of Helsinki.
According to archaeologists, the Jyväskylä has been inhabited since 3,500 years ago. This is based of discovery of Stone Age artifacts in the area. The oldest documents mentioning Jyväskylä were records of taxation for seven estates in the area dating back to 1539.
The modern city of Jyväskylä that we know today was founded by Czar Nicholas I of Russia on 22 March, 1837. The city center was laid out in a grid pattern. Since its founding, the city has sprawled beyond its city center, with population continuing to increase by a rate of about a thousand every year.

The most practical way to reach Jyväskylä is to take the train. The city is connected by rail to all the major cities in Finland. A journey from Helsinki takes around 3-4 hours.
