Oulu is the biggest city in Northern Finland and the sixth largest in the country. Located in the region of Northern Ostrobothnia, Oulu covers 1,513.37 sq km (584.3 sq mi) and has a population of 142,000 (2011 estimate). It is one of the northernmost large cities in the world.

Oulu was founded by King Charles IX of Sweden on 8 April, 1605, across from the fort on the island of Linnansaari. The settlement was at the mouth of the river Oulujoki, on the coast facing the Gulf of Bothnia. The name means "flood" or "flood water" in both the Finnish and local Sami languages.

As with many of the cities in Finland, Oulu suffered a fire that destroyed much of it. The blaze too place in 1822. The rebuilding of Oulu was hemmed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel, who designed most of the public buildings in the Neo-Classical style. Among the building he designed for Oulu was its cathedral, completed in 1832, to replace the earlier one destroyed by the fire.

Due to its latitude, Oulu experiences a subarctic climate. The warmest weather is in July, when the average high temperature reaches 20.4°C (68.7°F). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature recedes to a bitter -15.4°C (4.3°F).

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
