Pori is said to be a Finnish pronunciation of the Swedish word
borg, meaning "castle". The Swedish name of the city is Björneborg, meaning "bear castle". Pori is today one of the oldest cities in Finland . It was founded in 1558 to replace earlier towns on the Kokemäenjoki river which had become difficult to navigate.
The population of an earlier village, Ulvila, was ordered to relocate to Pori, which received 300 involuntary residents. Still, the newcomers soon realise that Pori offered clear advantages over their old village, as it offers a better location for trading.
