The Verla Groundwood and Board Mill is an outstanding example of the small-scale pulp and paper industry of northern Europe and North America of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Only a handful of such settlements can still be found today.
Verla Groundwood and Board Mill was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 20th session of the World Heritage Committee with met in Mérida, Mexico, on 2 - 7 December, 1996.

Verla Goundwood and Board Mill is located in Jaala, which in 2009 was merged with five other municipalities (Kouvola, Kuusankoski, Elimäki, Anjalankoski and Valkeala) to form the new expanded municipality of Kouvola. You can reach Kouvola by train from Helsinki.
