Amboise is a town in the district of Indre-et-Loire, in the Centre region of France. It covers 40.65 sq km (15.70 sq mi) and has a population of 12,500 people (2012 estimate).
The most prominent landmark in Amboise is Château d'Amboise which dates to the late 9th century, which passed down to different rulers over the century. This was where King Francis I received Leonardo da Vinci, after which da Vinci lived and worked at nearby Clos Lucé.
The town of Amboise is charming with its well preserved half-timbered houses. There is also a Chinese pagoda standing incongrously overlooking the town. It was built in 1774 by the Duke of Choiseul. The seven-story structure is 44 meters tall.
