Angers is the principal city in the district of Maine-et-Loire, in the region of Pays de la Loire, France. It has a population of 157,000 people (2012 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 283,000 people.
Angers dates back to the pre-Roman times. The main sight in this city is Cháteau d'Angers, built in the early 13th century. Of much interest also is the Cathedral of Saint-Maurice, which dates from the 12th century. The distinctive twin spires of the cathedral forms a local landmark.
Some of the old churches in Angers are now preserved ruins which can still be visited. Among them include the 11th century Notre-Dame du Ronceray and the 13th century churches of Toussaint. The city also has a good number of wooden houses first erected in the 15th and 16th centuries.
