Auvergne covers 26,013 sq km (10,043.7 sq mi). It has a population of 1.3 million people (2011 estimate). The regional capital is the city of Clermont-Ferrand.
It is surprising to note that the terrain of Auvergne is volcanic, though it is safe to say that none of the volcanoes of Auvergne has erupted in the past 6,000 years. Nonetheless Auvergne is the largest volcanic region in Europe.
