Auxerre is a town in the district of Yonne, in Burgundy, France. It covers 50 sq km (19 sq mi) and has a population of 44,600 people (2012 estimate). Auxerre is famous for its wine, particularly the Chablis.
The history of Auxerre goes back to the Gallo-Roman period, when it was called Antissiodorum. It became a bishopric in the 3rd century, and was given a cathedral in the 5th century. The Counts of Auxerre built new city walls for it in the 11th century.
Auxerre has a well-preserved old town. It was named "Town of Art and History" in 1995.
How to go to Auxerre
From Paris, take the A6 expressway heading southeast until you reach the exit for Auxerre. Alternatively, there are trains from Paris and Dijon.
