Avallon is a small town in the district of Yonne, in Burgundy, France. It covers 27 sq km (10 sq mi) and has a population of 7,700 people (2012 estimate).
Settlement in Avallon has been traced to the Gallo-Roman period, based on discovery of Roman coins and pottery shards in the area. There is a believe that Avallon is the Avalon in the King Arthur legend, and that King Arthur himself is the Romano-British king Riothamus who disappeared, possibly killed, after being defeated by the Goths.
Avallon's economy is based on cottage industries, such as the manufacture of biscuits and gingerbread. It also produces farm implements and leather goods.
