Centre is one of the 26 regions of France. Despite its name, Centre is a bit off centre, being towards the northwest of the country. Orléans is the regional capital while Tours is the biggest city. Centre covers 39,151 sq km (15,116 sq mi) and has a population of 2.5 million people (2011 estimate).
Centre borders Île-de-France to the north, Burgundy to the east, Auvergne to the southeast, Limousin to the south, Poitou-Charentes to the southwest, Pays-de-la-Loire to the west, and Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy to the northwest. Centre includes the Loire Valley, drained by the Loire River and its tributaries such as the Cher, Indre and Loiret.
