Le Puy-en-Velay is a small town in the district of Haute-Loire, in Auvergne, France. The town covers 17 sq km (6.5 sq mi) and has a population of 20,000 people (2012 estimate).
Le Puy-de-Velay has a striking landscape marked by two local landmarks, the Chapel of Saint Michel d'Aiguilhe and the iron statue of Notre-Dame de France.
The most popular attraction in town is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Puy. This cathedral dates to the early 12th century. It was built on the site of a Christianized pagan site that marked the starting point for pilgrims on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. For that reason, the cathedral is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1998.

The local culinary specialities of Le Puy is a type of dark green lentil which is favored for its high protein and low carbohydrate content. The town is also famous for lace making and for Verveine, a green liqueur.

The nearest major city from Le Puy-en-Velay is Saint-Étienne. From there, you can take Highway N88 heading in the southwest direction to reach it.
