Lorient is a town and seaport in the district of Morbihan, in Brittany, France. Also written as L'Orient, it covers 17.5 sq km (6.7 sq mi) and has a population of 58,000 people (2012 estimate).
Lorient got its name because it was founded in 1628 as the site of warehouses of the French East India Company (
Compagnie des Indes Orientales). King Louis XIV built shipyards here for the ships trading with India.
During the Second World War, Lorient suffered heavy bombing from Allied Forces in their attempt to destroy the U-boat submarines of the Nazis based there. The submarine base can still be seen today at the fishing port of Keroman in Lorient.
