Mulhouse is a French city in the Alsace region, in eastern France. It is quite close to the border with Germany. It covers 22.18 sq km (8.56 sq mi) and has a population of 112,000 (2011 estimate) and 278,000 within its metropolitan area. It is the biggest city in Haut-Rhin and the second biggest in Alsace after Strasbourg. The city is on the banks of the rivers Doller and Ill, both tributaries flowing into the Rhine.

Located close to the Swiss border, Mulhouse was badly damaged during World War II bombings, but has since been well restored. Today its city center houses modern shopping malls and a technical museum as well as Alsation taverns and Swiss wine bars. Among the museums in Mulhouse include the largest automobile and railway museums in France. The city is also the gateway for visiting the Sundgau hills on the Swiss border.

The history of Mulhouse goes back to 58 BC when it was under the Romans. It then became part of the Holy Roman Empire. The city joined the Swiss Confederation in 1515, and did not become part of France until 1798, when its citizens voted to do so. This led to the Treaty of Mulhouse on 28 January 1798.

Mulhouse was annexed by Germany in 1870, becoming part of the German Empire until the end of the First World War, when it returned to France. During the Second World War it was again occupied by Germany until the end of the war.
