Nevers is a town and district capital of Nièvre district, in Burgundy, France. It covers 17 sq km (7 sq mi) and has a population of 43,000 people (2012 estimate).
Nevers dates back to Roman times, when it was first mentioned as Noviodunum. Over time, it evolved to Nevirnum, Ebrinum and Nebirnum. It may also have given the name to the river Nièvre, or perhaps the other way around.
Today Nevers has winding streets leading from the quayside to the town center. The town is well preserved with a number of historic monuments.
