Pont Marie is a bridge across the River Seine in Paris. It was named after Christophe Marie, the engineer who proposed its constructed back in 1605.
Pont Marie links the Right Bank of the Seine, at quai de l'Hôtel de Ville to the
Île Saint-Louis.
The original Pont Marie was opened in 1635. After its opening, there were plans to build houses along its span. Despite objection from Christophe Marie, fifty houses were built. Catastrophe struct in 1658 when a big floor washed away twenty of these houses killing about sixty people. A century was to pass before a law was in place forbidding houses from being built on bridges in Paris.
The appearance of Pont Marie is little change since the 18th century except for a levelling of its rise but not much change to its appearance.
