Périgueux has been settled as early as Celtic time, when it was given the name which means "the four tribes". When the Roman took over the town, they built the Roman infrastructure to make themselves at home, including their temples, baths, amphitheater and forum.
Périgueux is renowned domestically for its local cuisine. The best time to visit is on market day, when the town square is bedecked with stalls selling local specialities and delicacies. During specific parts of the year, the local specialities include truffles (November to March),
charcuterie and a local pie called
pâtés de Périgueux.
