The Benedictine Abbey of Vézelay in France was founded in the 9th century. It holds the relics of St Mary Magdalene, making it an important pilgrimage site.

It was at Vézelay that St Bernard preached the Second Crusade in 1146, and Richard the Lion-Hearted met with Philip II Augustus before embarking on the Third Crusade in 1190. The Madeleine of Vézelay is a 12th century monastic chruch regarded as a masterpiece of Burgundian Romanesque art and architecture.

Vézelay, Church and Hill was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 3rd session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Cairo and Luxor, Egypt, on 22 - 26 October, 1979.
