Altenburg is a town in the district of Altenburger Land, on the east side of the state of Thuringia, in eastern Germany. it covers 46 sq km (18 sq mi) and has a population of 34,500 people (2012 estimate). The town also serves as district capital.
The history of Altenburg goes back to AD 976. The town was probably founded by Slavs, judging from the remains of a Slavic castle on Schloßberg ("Castle Hill"). Altenburg's location on the imperial road between Halle and Cheb in Bohemia helped it develop during the medieval age.
After the Napoleonic Wars, Altenburg was made the capital of Saxe-Altenburg until 1920, when Saxe-Altenburg merged with Thuringia. During the Second World War, Altenburg was the site of the Buchenwald concentration camp.
