Bad Doberan traces its history to 1171, when the Doberan Abbey was founded by Cistercian monks. It was just a small village called Doberan until 1793, when the Duke of Mecklenburg founded Heiligendamm, the first bathing resort in Germany. A railway line was then built to link then Doberan with Heiligendamm. Since 1921, it was renamed Bad Doberan, in recognition of its status as a spa town.
For many years, it was believed that Bad Doberan granted honorary citizenship to Adolf Hitler in August 1932, becoming the first town in Germany to do so. However the certificate could not be found, so there is no way to verify the truth to this. Nonetheless a document was found in 2011 which showed that the town nof Rosenkopf granted Adolf Hitler honorary citizenship in July 1932, earlier than Bad Doberan.
