Bad Nenndorf is a spa town in the district of Schaumburg in Lower Saxony. Located about 25 km to the west of Hanover, Bad Nenndorf covers 23 sq km (8.9 sq mi) and has a population of 10,500 people (2012 estimate).
The history of Bad Nenndorf is traced back to the 9th century. It was the property of the Counts of Schaumburg from 1311. Its name indicates the presence of a bath, or spring. In this case, it is a sulphur spring that was first recorded in 1546. Spa facilities were built here in 1787.
Due to its pungent adour, sulphur springs were despised as "devil's excrement". But when their therapeutic properties were discovered, the spa at Bad Nenndorf became one of the most successful in Germany, as the potency of its waters was credited for treating rheumatism, arthritis and various skin ailments.
