The Bauhaus school of architecture developed between 1919 and 1933. It was first based in Weimar, and then in Dessau. The school was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar as a merger between the Grand Ducal School of Art and Crafts and the Weimar Academy of Art.

The Bauhaus School revolutionized concepts of architecture and aesthetics as was being practised at that time. The school's professors and founders launched the Modern Movement which shaped architecture that we know of in much of the 20th century.

Bauhaus and its Sites in Weimar and Dessau was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 20th session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Merida, Mexico, on 2-7 December, 1996.
