Bautzen (Upper Sorbian: Budyšin, Lower Sorbian: Budyšyn, Czech: Budyšín, Polish: Budziszyn) is a town on the eastern part of the state of Saxony, Germany. It covers 67 sq km (26 sq mi) and has a population of 40,500 people (2012 estimate).
Located on the river Spree, Bautzen is regarded as the cultural center of the Sorbian people. Its history dates to the 3rd century AD, when a Germanic settlement was established here.
The modern city has a well-preserved old town center with beautiful historical buildings including churches, towers and a medieval wall. On the river Spree is a steep embankment with waterworks built in 1558, making it among the oldest in central Europe. The Saint Peter's Cathedral of Bautzen is the only historic interdenominational church in eastern Germany.
