Eisenach is a town on the western part of the state of Thuringia, in eastern Germany. It covers an area of 104 sq km (40 sq mi) and has a population of 43,000 people (2012 estimate).
Eisenach traces its history to the construction of Wartburg Castle, which according to legend was built in 1067. Settlements that developed at the foot of the castle eventually formed a town which was first mentioned in AD 1180.
The theologian Martin Luther spend his childhood in Eisenach. It was also here that he later received protection from Frederick the Wise, the Elector of Saxony, when he was pursued for his views. He translated the New Testament while staying at Wartburg Castle here, today the main tourist attraction in town.
In addition to Martin Luther, the other famous person associated with Eisenach was Johann Sebastian Bach, who was born here in 1685.
