Frankfurt (Oder) is a city in the state of Brandenburg, in eastern Germany. Not to be confused with the bigger Frankfurt am Main, this city is on the river Oder which forms the border between Germany and Poland. Across the Oder from Frankfurt is the town of Słubice in Poland. The city used to be written as Frankfurt an der Oder, but is now officially Frankfurt (Oder). Frankfurt covers 148 sq km (57 sq mi) and has a population of 60,000 people (2012 estimate).

The city of Frankfurt (Oder) traces its history to at least the 13th century. It received its town charter in 1253. The western bank of the Oder was where the town originally developed. Later on it extended to include the eastern bank, which today forms the town of Słubice.

The Thirty Years' War had Frankfurt being added to the Swedish Empire, where it remained until the Napoleonic Wars, when it became part of the Province of Brandenburg of the Kingdom of Prussia.

The end of the Second World War saw the German-Polish border shifting east to run along the Oder, dividing Frankfurt into two parts. Dammvorstadt, the area to the east of the Oder, became the Polish town of Słubice. Frankfurt (Oder) became part of East Germany until German reunification in 1990. Ironically, reunification brought misery rather than prosperity, as the city suffered from high unemployment and low growth. This is reflected in the decline in its population, which stood at 87,000 at time of reunification.

How to go to Frankfurt (Oder)

From Berlin, take the ring road Autobahn 10 to Autobahn 12, then continue east on Autobahn 12. Just before the Polish border, turn off at Exit 9 to enter Frankfurt (Oder).

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
