Gardelegen is a town in the district of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, in northern Germany. It covers 632 sq km (244 sq mi) and has a population of 24,000 people (2012 estimate).

The history of Gardelegn goes back to the 10th century. It joined the Hanseatic League in 1358. After a period of prosperity it went into decline by the 17th century and was greatly devastated during the Thirty Years' War, when the French burned it down in 1775.

As with many of the cities in this part of Germany, Gardelegen had a concentration camp during the Second World War. Here the Nazis killed over a thousand slave laborers on 13 April, 1945.

How to go to Gardelegen

From Magdeburg, take Highway 71 heading north to reach Gardelegen. If you are coming from Braunschweig, take Autobahn 39 heading north to Wolfsburg and then continue heading east on Highway 188 to reach Gardelegen.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
