Gießen is a town in the district and administrative region of Gießen, in Hesse, Germany. There are a number of rivers flowing through the town, the biggest of which is the Lahn.
Gießen is about 50 km to the north of Frankfurt am Main. It covers 72.562 sq km (28.016 sq mi) and has a population of 77,000 people (2012 estimate). The town traces its beginnings to the construction of a moated castle in the area by Count Wilhelm von Gleiberg in 1152.

Gießen is located to the north of Frankfurt am Main. From Frankfurt, take Autobahn 5 heading north, exiting at Fernwald, then continue west on Route 457 to reach Gießen.
