Goslar is a historic town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It covers 93 sq km (36 sq mi) and has a population of 41,000 people (2012 estimate). It is at the foot of the Harz Mountains, with the lowest point being the Oker River, at 175 m (574 ft) and the highest point the Kahlerberg, at 762 m (2,503 ft) above sea level. The old town of Goslar is today a World Heritage Site entitled "Mines of Rammelsberg and Historic Town of Goslar".
Goslar has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. It has an almost unbroken history that encompassed the Saxon period, the Holy Roman Empire, the Reformation, right up to the period of the Nazi dictatorship and German reunification.
Today Goslar has a charming, well-preserved old town with many timber-framed buildings. The Rammelsberg Mine Museum is one of the sights on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
