Halberstadt is a town in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt in north central Germany. It occupies 143 sq km (55 sq mi) and has a population of 42,600 people (2012 estimate).
Halberstadt dates to at least the 9th century, when it was made an episcopal see. It grew as a trading outpost in the Medieval period. A number of notable churches were built here including the Liebfrauenkirche and the Halberstadt Cathedral, which holds a virtually complete collection of its medieval treasury, including some of the oldest tapestries in Europe.
How to go to Halberstadt
Halberstadt is located to the southwest of Magdeburg. From Magdeburg, the direct route is to take Highway 81 which goes right through Halberstadt.
