Hildesheim is a city on the banks of the Innerste River in Lower Saxony, Germany. It covers 93 sq km (36 sq mi) and has a population of 103,000 people (2012 estimate).
Dating back to AD 815, Hildesheim is one of the oldest cities in northern Germany. It began as a market place which developed into a town. The site of the old market, called Alter Markt, is still around today.
Hildesheim suffered severe devastation from Allied bombing during the Second World War. After the war many of its major churches were rebuilt in their original style. Two of these are today recognised as a World Heritage Site entitled "St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's Church at Hildesheim".
