Kassel is a city in the Kassel administrative region, in Hesse, Germany. Located on the Fulda River, it covers 107 sq km (41 sq mi) and has a population approaching 200,000 people (2012 estimate).
The name Kassel came from Castellum Cattorum, the castle built by a Germanic tribe during Roman times. The city itself was first mentioned in AD 913. It was in Kassel that the Brothers Grimm lived and worked. From here, they collected fairy tales that made them world renowned today.
Kassel was severely devastated during the Second World War. After the war, many of its historic buildings were not rebuilt. As a result, the downtown is today filled with buildings erected in the 1950s.
