Ludwigshafen is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the west bank of the River Rhine, across from the city of Mannheim in Baden-Württemberg. The city is the birthplace of former Germann chancellor Helmut Kohl and philosopher Ernst Bloch. The chemical giant BASF has its headquarters here.

Ludwigshafen covers 78 sq km (30 sq mi) and has a population of 164,000 people (2012 estimate). The city is about 96 m (315 ft) above sea level. Human habitation here dates back to antiquity, with evidence of Celtic and Germanic presence dating to the 1st century BC. However the modern city was only founded in 1844, when the area was sold to the state of Bavaria, and the town established here was named after the Bavarian king, Ludwig I.

In 1865, BASF relocated across the Rhine from Mannheim, providing a huge boost to Ludwigshafen's economy. The plants in Ludwigshafen provided the ingredients for Germany during the Second World War. This was where explosives, gun powder and gas used in the war was produced. As a result, Ludwigshafen earned the dubious distinction for being the first civilian settlement to be bombed by air.

How to go to Ludwigshafen

To reach Ludwigshafen, you can take an Inter-City Express (ICE) high-speed train from Frankfurt to Mannheim, and then from Mannheim take a local train or S-Bahn to reach Ludwigshafen.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
