Neu-Ulm was created in 1810, when the part of Ulm to the south of the River Danube became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. It was then called New-Ulm, or New Ulm, to differentiate it from the existing town of Ulm. The city received a boost when it was selected as the site of the Bundesfestung, or Federal Fort, in 1841.

After the Second World War, the US military maintained a presence until 1991. When they pulled out, it had a major impact on the local economy.
