The history of Neubrandenburg goes back to around 1240, when the Premonstratensian monks established Broda Abbey there. This led to the founding of the town by the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1248. It grew into a trading post until the Thirty Years' War (1618-48) which brought its decline.
Today Neubrandenburg is a well-preserved town. Its medieval city wall is largely intact, as are the four Brick Gothic town gates.
