Oldenburg is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany. It covers 103 sq km (40 sq mi) and has a population of 162,000 people (2012 estimate). It is situated on the River Hunte and the River Haaren.
The history of Oldenburg goes back to 1108. It was first mentioned as Aldenburg. By the medieval period, it was eclipsed by the Hanseatic city of Bremen. Nonetheless Oldenburg managed to gain prosperity of its own, particularly in the 17th century. The city was a grand duchy until 1918, when the defeat of the German Empire in the First World War forced the abdication of Grand Duke Frederick Augustus II of Oldenburg. The grand duchy became the Free State of Oldenburg until 1946, when it was made part of Lower Saxony.
