Oppenheim is a small town in the district of Mainz-Bingen, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, in southwestern Germany. It has an area of just 7 sq km (2.7 sq mi) and a population of around 7,000 people (2012 estimate). The town is at the heart of the German wine growing region.

Oppenheim traces its history to AD 765, when it first appeared in a document relating to a donation by Charlemagne. The town was occupied by Spaniards from 1620 to 1632. Then it fell to the French in 1688 during which it was utterly destroyed. A rebuilt town then passed to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1816 and remained so until 1945, when it was made part of the present state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
