Rhineland-Palatinate is a state in the wine-growing part of the Federal Republic of Germany. It covers an area of 19,846 sq km (7,663 sq mi) and has a population of just over 4 million people. It is known in German as Rheinland-Pfalz. Its capital is the city of Mainz.

Rhineland-Palatinate is bordered by North Rhine-Westphalia to the north, Hesse to the east, Baden-Württemberg to the southeast, France to the south, Luxembourg to the west and Belgium to the northwest.

Rhineland-Palatinate was created on 30 August, 1946 from parts of the northern French Occupation Zone, parts of Bavaria called the Rhenish Palatinate, parts of Prussian Rhine Province, parts of the Prussian Nassau province, and parts of Hesse-Darmstadt. The River Rhine flows through the state, for a stretch forming a natural border for Rhineland-Palatinate with Baden-W¨rttemberg and Hesse. In the northern part of the state to the west of the Rhine are the Eifel and Hunsrück mountain ranges. The southern part of the state are the forested Palatinate region.

Rhineland-Palatinate is divided into 24 districts which are grouped into three administrative regions namely Koblenz, Trier and Rheinhessen-Pfalz. As mentioned earlier, the state is the biggest wine producer in Germany Six of the thirteen wine-producing regions of the country are located in Rhineland-Palatinate, namely Ahr, Mittelrhein, Mosel, Nahe, Pfalz and Rheinhessen.

In addition to viticulture, Rhineland-Palatinate also has a well-developed chemical industry. The world's largest chemical company, BASF, is headquartered in Ludwigshafen. In addition, the city of Wörth am Rhein has automobile manufacturing facilities for Opel and Daimler trucks.

Visiting Rhineland-Palatinate

The most practical way to reach Rhineland-Palatinate is to take a train from any major city in Germany such as Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich or Stuttgart. The Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) is the only international airport in the state. The airport is located about 10 km (6.2 mi) from the town of Kirchberg. Low-cost carrier Ryanair is the main airline flying from this airport, which is also served by Wizz Air.
