Rosenheim is a city in the administrative region of Upper Bavaria, on the southern part of Bavaria, Germany. It covers 37 sq km (14 sq mi), and with a population of 61,500 people (2012 estimate), it ranks as the third largest city in Upper Bavaria.

The present city of Rosenheim was first mentioned in 1234 in reference to its castle. That was also the same time when boatloads of settlers began to develop the area west of the river Inn, at its confluence with the river Mangfall. The resulting village was a trading center for livestock, grain, silk and other products. River and inland transportation helped Rosenheim position itself as a hub for shipbuilding.

The prosperity achieved in the medieval period began to decline in the 17th century, particularly following the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) compounded by a plague epidemic in 1634 and a major fire in 1641.

At the turn of the 20th century, Rosenheim had a substantial Jewish population which met with increasing hostility, particularly after the formation of a local Nazi group in the city in 1920. Rosenheim emerged from the Second World War a shell of its former self, with many of its buildings destroyed and hundreds of people perishing. Today the city has entirely rebuilt itself and quite a number of its medieval structures were restored.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
