Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It covers 181 sq km (70 sq mi) and has a population of 203,000 people (2012 estimate). It straddles the River Warnow, stretching all the way to the coast of the Baltic Sea.
The history of Rostock goes back to the 11th century, when a settlement was founded here by the name of Roztoc. It was however destroyed by the Danish king Valdemar I in 1161. After that, German traders reestablished the town comprising various settlements now known as Altstadt (Old Town), Mittelstadt (Middle Town) and Neustadt (New Town).

Rostock joined the Hanseatic League and grew into a powerful seaport in the 14th century. Its university was founded in 1419, one of the oldest in Northern Europe. The city was a center for aircraft manufacturing in the early 20th century. It was here that jet aircrafts made their first test flights.
The Second World War brought severe devastation to the city and its economy. After the war, Rostock became part of the German Democratic Republic until reunification in 1990. Following reunification, the city's economy experienced a contraction before eventually started growing again.

How to go to Rostock
The Rostock-Laage Airport (RLG) receives flights from Stockholm. Alternatively, you can fly to Hamburg and then take a train from there to Rostrock. If going there by road, take Autobahn 20.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
