Rüdesheim am Rhein is a town in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis district, in the administrative region of
Darmstadt, in
Hesse, Germany. It covers 51 sq km (20 sq mi) and has a population of 9,600 people (2012 estimate).
Rüdesheim am Rhein traces its history to a settlement established by Celtic tribes. Various tribes took over the area including the Ubii and the Mattiaci. They were in turn replaced by the Romans. The area came under Prussian rule in 1867.
Located at the foot of the Niederwald, on the right bank of the Rhine, Rüdesheim am Rhein developed into a winemaking town. Being part of the
Upper Middle Rhine Valley, it is one of the town included as a World heritage Site in the inscription at the 26th session of the World Heritage Committee in
Budapest, Hungary, on 24-29 June, 2002.
How to go to Rüdesheim am Rhein
Rüdesheim am Rhein is located to the west of Frankfurt am Main. From Frankfurt, head west on Autobahn 66 to Wiesbaden, then continue west on Route 42 until you reach Rüdesheim am Rhein.
