Saarlouis is a small city in the state of Saarland, on the central western part of Germany. It covers 43 sq km (17 sq mi) and has a population of 37,000 people (2012 estimate). The city was named after King Louis XIV of France and for the fact that the Saar river flows through it.
Saarlouis dates to 1680, when the area came under French rule. King Louis XIV gave orders for a fortification to be erected on the banks of the Saar river, and the site was to be named Sarre-Louis. The township was designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, then the most famous military engineer in France.
Saarlouis has changed its name or spelling a number of times. It became Sarre-Libre during the French Revolution, but reverted to Sarre-Louis in 1810. When it came under Prussian rule, it was renamed Saarlouis, and remains so since - through between 1936 and 1945, it was named Saarlautern.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
