Sassnitz is a town in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It covers 46 sq km (18 sq mi) and has a population of 10,300 people (2012 estimate).
Sassnitz is located on the Jasmund peninsula, on Rügen Island. It is the base for visiting Jasmund National Park and other nature reserves in the area. The present town came about in 1906, when the village of Crampas was merged with the village of Sassnitz. It was spelled Saßnitz until 1993, when it was changed to the present spelling.
